Advanced Nutrition Programme
Why take supplements?
Over recent years the nutritional profile of foods has changed and for many people whose lifestyles have become more pressured and fast-paced, it is not always possible to obtain optimal levels of nutrition from the diet. Supplements can have a role to play to help ensure the daily intake of important nutrients.
The methods of growing crops have changed dramatically in recent years. Modern intensive industrial farming methods have led to changes in the levels of minerals and nutrients in the soil. A United Nations report estimates that over 2 billion people worldwide suffer from hidden hunger dietary deficiencies that undermine their physical and mental health.
Storage of fresh produce both in transit, supermarket shelf and domestic houses, followed by cooking and processing then diminishes nutrients further.
A report by the UK Ministry of Agriculture titled The Composition of Food shows the changes in nutritional content of fruit, vegetables and meat, in the past 60 years:
Vegetables have lost on average 24% of their magnesium, 46% of their calcium, 27% of their iron, 76% of their copper.
Among seventeen varieties of fruit, the amounts of both magnesium and calcium were 16% lower, zinc was down by 27%, the iron content 24% and the copper content by 20%.
In a range of ten popular cuts of meat, the iron content
fell by 54% and the copper content by 24%.
Selenium in fresh food is down by 50%.
Selenium is a key anti-ageing mineral.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How do you identify a good quality vitamin supplement?
A: As with most things, you pay for quality, so, within reason, price is a place to start. The cheapest supplements are usually so for a reason - cheaper forms of nutrients, or lower amounts, are used. For example, iron sulphate is less absorbable than iron amino acid chelate: and natural vitamin E (called d-alpha tocopherol) is more potent than synthetic (dl-alpha tocopherol). A reputable company will also list all ingredients and state that the product is free from colourings and undesirable additives. ANP avoids using any unnecessary colourings, flavourings or additives.
Q: What makes Advanced Nutrition Programme superior to other multi-vitamins?
A: Advanced Nutrition Formula multi-packs are designed to provide more than mere survival doses of the 100% RDA that is in typical multi-vitamins. These may correct deficiencies but do not provide the higher doses needed for 'optimal' health and longevity that ANP does.
Q: When is the best time to take supplements?
A: It is best to take vitamin, mineral or essential fatty acid supplements while food is in your digestive tract, so this can mean 15 minutes before or up to 30 minutes after eating. Some supplements, like amino acid maybe better absorbed on an empty stomach. This will be indicated in the directions. The general rule is to always take supplements with food.
Q: What's the best age to start taking a multi-nutrient formula?
A: Anyone 16 or over can take the Advanced Nutrition Programme daily as an excellent multivitamin, mineral and antioxidant pill. After age 25, the combination formula is even more important as that's the age at which the detrimental effects of ageing start to kick-in.
Q: What exactly are antioxidants?
A: Antioxidants are special nutrients that protect us from harmful toxins called oxidants or free radicals, which damage cells, accelerate ageing and cause disease. These by-products of oxygen are like the 'sparks' that emanate from anything that's burnt, including cigarettes, petrol and fried or barbecued food. Even the process we use to 'burn' food for energy inside our body cells end up making a bucketful of oxidants every year.
Antioxidants are like fireproof gloves, catching the sparks and protecting us. Each antioxidant becomes 'hot' and passes the oxidant to another until there is no more danger - so they work cooperatively. The key players are vitamin E (seeds, nuts and fish); vitamin C (fruits and vegetables); vitamin A and beta-carotene (orange or red foods); glutathione (onions and garlic); and anthocyanidins (berries and beetroot). You can top these up with an all-round antioxidant supplement that contains each of the above.
Q: Are megadoses of vitamins harmful for you?
A: This is one of the longest running myths in nutrition today. The truth is there has never been a single death attributed to a vitamin supplement. The most commonly reported scares are that vitamin C can give you kidney stones and incrase your risk of heart disease and that vitamin B6 can damage your nerves. Both of these statements have been proven untrue, even at doses 10 times above the highest you'll find in supplements. While it is true that massively high doses of vitamins A, D and B6 can harm you, in reality these levels are very hard to achieve. The Institute for Optimum Nutrition has monitored over 50,000 people taking supplements and has never seen a case of vitamin overdose.
Having said this, when a person takes a large amount of an individual nutrient, without any others, this can have less desirable effects. That is why we say the starting point is a high-strength multi-vitamin. Beta-carotene in food protects against cancer. Other studies show that beta-carotene, if supplemented with vitamin C and E, reduces cancer risk. But a couple of studies have suggested that beta-carotene, on its own, may modestly increase risk in smokers. So the way is clear - go for a good multi at the start.
Q: When you take all these high-dose supplements, don't you just excrete them?
A: Water is the body's most essential nutrient. Yet, once it has done its job it is simply excreted. Does that mean you shouldn't drink water? The same is true for many nutrients. Supplementing vitamin C, for example, raises vitamin C levels in the blood for a few hours, then it's excreted. During that time, however, it protects cells from damage and makes it hard for any invading bacteria or viruses to survive. Nutrients come and go. In between they do their work.
Q: When I take a multivitamin my urine turns yellow. Does this mean I'm taking too much?
A: It is vitamin B2 (riboflavin) that makes your urine yellow. Once the body has used it, or if there is any excess, it is simply eliminated. But don't look at it as a wasteful excess, as it only stays in your body for about four hours, so you're unlikely to use all of it. If your urine is particularly dark yellow, you may need to increase your intake of pure water - aim to have at least 1-2 litres a day.
Q: Since starting to take supplements I feel worse, not better, and have developed spots and headaches! Why?
A: To check if you're reacting adversely to the supplements or to something in them, the obvious thing to do would be to stop taking them and see if you feel better and your new symptoms clear. However, what may be going on (and this is very common) is that your body is detoxifying. Any changes to your diet or nutrient levels can trigger the body to begin to clear out toxins that have been hindering your overall health for some time. In the short term this can cause spots, headaches and general malaise, but these should pass within a couple of weeks.
You can aid your body in its efforts to detoxify by drinking plenty of water, eating a 'clean' diet (cutting out or reducing your consumption of meat, dairy, fats, fried foods, stimulants like coffee and so on), and have plenty of fibre (to aid elimination via the bowels).
Q: What's your advice for someone who has trouble swallowing supplements?
A: Swallowing is a skill, that can be learned, or can be psychological. As the throat naturally opens for food or drinks, small supplements can be swallowed between or with gulps of a fruit smoothie or while eating. Multis and other supplements tend to be large, but there's no problem with cutting tablets in half, crushing them or emptying capsules.
